The NEMO project: cutting-edge innovation in noise and emissions remote sensing
Europe 2017 - 2020
The NEMO project (Noise and Emissions Monitoring and Radical Mitigation) was an H2020 EU-funded project, executed between 2020 and 2023. It was a research and innovation project to create a turn-key solution through which new systems are integrated into existing infrastructure to empirically measure emissions and noise emitted by individual vehicles.
New prototypes and solutions were developed and tested, together with the implementation of new mitigation solutions, to form a global and scalable solution to improve air quality and reduce noise impact in European cities. By the envisaged standardization, the systems would represent an instrument for enforcement against high-emitters in Low-Emission Zones and other sensitive areas.
The 5 key building blocks of NEMO are:
- Emissions: Development of a new RSD, based on laser technologies.
- Noise: Development of a new noise measurement system in a microphone-array format that can identify noisy circulating vehicles.
- Integration: Data integration from all road sensors into a digital platform: NAUTILUS. Integration of the sensors into the road infrastructure and managed services.
- I2V-I2I: New communication solutions to inform drivers, connected cars and authorities.
- Mitigation: Development of noise and emissions mitigation solution that combines multifunctional barriers with new photocatalytic porous pavements.
NEMO was selected by EIT Mobility to showcase the solution at the 2023 Urban Mobility Days in Seville, where NEMO was one of three EU-projects to be awardd as a ready-to-market solution.
