Opus has installed a system for the remote measurement of real-world vehicle emissions at the Irún toll station, located at the border between the Basque Country and France. This marked an unprecedented technological milestone, being the first system of its kind installed at a road toll plaza for the continuous monitoring of vehicle emissions. Equipped with 5G connectivity provided by MasOrange, the RSD provides real-time transmission of actual emission levels emitted by each vehicle.

The system has a huge potential to revolutionize traffic emissions monitoring at this important cross-border location. The RSD can detect potential tampered vehicles, issuing real-time alerts and informing the traffic authorities. The system is installed at a toll lane focused on trucks. In this way, the system makes it possible to focus surveillance on this particular type of vehicle.

This new system paves the way for fairer and more selective “Pollution-based tolling” systems, rewarding cleaner vehicles while charging higher rates for the most polluting ones.

the system has been installed thanks to the CRETA project, funded by the Ministry for Digital Transformation and Public Administration. The initiative combines advanced sensing technology with 5G communication systems to reduce traffic emissions and improve the quality of life of Europeans.
