How clean is your car? Remote sensing and real-time information for Madrid drivers

In 2021 Opus installed a fixed RSD for measuring vehicle emissions under real-world conditions. This was the first cabin of its type to operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The system was fully digitally connected and integrated with the Spanish vehicle registry database.
In this innovation project, vehicles identified as high emitters—those exceeding expected or permitted emission levels—could receive a notification requiring them to undergo an extraordinary technical inspection test or face the revocation of their access permit to enter the low emission zone. This way, remote sensing technology could be effective in supporting public policies on vehicle maintenance.
But it was not just the authorities who received data—drivers were informed about their vehicle’s emission levels right on the spot through a visual display located just a few meters after the measuring device. This allowed drivers to receive immediate feedback about their vehicle’s condition, enabling them to take necessary maintenance actions. It also contributed to increased environmental awareness.
