Microscale modelling of traffic emissions thanks to the integration of Opus RSD data into Aimsun simulation

Spain 2021
Opus partnered with Aimsum as part of the EU C-Roads project, with the goal of modeling traffic emissions on Madrid’s busiest road, the M30.

In 2021, Opus partnered with Aimsum as part of the EU C-Roads project, with the goal of modeling traffic emissions on Madrid’s busiest road, the M30. The collaboration combined Opus’ remote sensing technology, which easily integrates with any traffic software, with Aimsum’s simulation platform, to create an innovative approach to pollution monitoring.

Remote sensing devices were strategically placed along the M30 for months. These sensors captured real-time emissions from moving vehicles, generating a rich database that not only included measurements of CO, NOx, PM, and HC, but also detailed information on the type of vehicles, their speed and acceleration, all gathered through OPUS’ smart cameras.

The data collected was processed to calculate emission curves for every vehicle group, defining its real-world emission levels versus driving or traffic conditions. The data as integrated into Aimsum’s software to model real traffic emissions at microscale level.

Various traffic scenarios were simulated. This analysis delivered public authorities a set of actionable insights and strategies for reducing traffic emissions, backed by scientific data from cutting-edge technology.
