Spanish police and Europol uncover AdBlue manipulation scheme thanks to Opus RSDs

As part of the EU-funded LIFE program, in the GYSTRA project, OPUS RSE collaborated with GUARDIA CIVIL, Spain’s national police force, to find on the spot and remotely, illegally manipulated commercial trucks during the years 2018 and 2019, using Opus portable RSDs.
The operations were coordinated in less than 48 hours, selecting a new location each time, so that the RSD was put on the road in less than 20 minutes by the Opus technicians, and then the police arrived on the scene and began the police operation.
Some results of this program are:
- 47% of the inspected trucks were tampered with. For many other trucks, there were high suspicions of tampering, but the illegal device could not be found and the driver could not be fined.
- Opus and Guardia Civil performed studies to evaluate how much NOx emits a manipulated truck. In average, each manipulated truck emits up to 2 extra tones of NOx per year!
- Individual fines were issued to the drivers. But also, some companies are facing criminal charges for manipulating entire fleets of trucks (crime against public health).
